Book Review Rating Scale

I rate my book reviews on a star scale of 1 – 5.

There are many factors that I take into consideration when I write a book review. Among them are things like the setting, the characters, the style of writing, the pace of the book, the plot/storyline, and the overall way the book made me feel.

You may disagree with my rating, and that’s OK! Reviews are personal, and people may disagree about whether a book is worthwhile or not.

The book reviews featured on this blog represent my personal opinions and interpretations. It’s important to understand that a low-star rating is not intended to malign or discredit the author’s efforts. Each book speaks differently to every reader, and what might not resonate with me could be a favorite for someone else. Therefore, I encourage readers to explore books on their own and form their own opinions, regardless of the star rating assigned in my reviews. My goal is to share honest, thoughtful perspectives, not to dissuade anyone from their reading choices or otherwise alter their decision to purchase the author’s works.

5 Stars: A Treasured Favorite

This book has made a lasting impression on me in every aspect. For me, it stands out as a remarkable read, one that I’ll enthusiastically recommend for its memorable characters, engaging setting, exciting plot, or writing style. This is likely a book that will have caused book withdrawals and one that I will reread one or more times in the future. And, in the case of a 5* rating in the romance genre, I may be grieving the loss of my latest book boyfriend.

4.5 Stars: Highly Impressive

A solidly great read that left me thoroughly impressed. It may not have reinvented the wheel, but it spun it in a tantalizing way, with just a few spokes short of perfection. A book I’ll definitely recommend.

4 Stars: Thoroughly enjoyable

An utterly enjoyable read. While it may not completely redefine its genre, it possesses certain elements that I loved, albeit with some minor room for improvement. It offered me a pleasurable reading experience that I’d readily recommend to others.

3.5 Stars: Solid & Satisfying

A likable read, though it didn’t hit every note for me. It’s like a well-cooked meal that needed a pinch more seasoning. But likely OK for fans of the author or genre.

3 Stars: Decently Engaging

An adequate read. It didn’t sweep me off my feet, but it also didn’t make me want to run for the hills. It’s like a comfy chair that’s just a tad too creaky.

2.5 Stars: Had Its Moments

While reading this book didn’t make me feel like I was stuck in molasses and going nowhere, it probably dragged along to the point that I wondered every so often if I would make it to the finish line. The book had some worthwhile moments! But maybe just a few.

2 Stars: Difficult To Get Through

Getting through this book felt like wading through molasses. It didn’t resonate with me, and its style might not be everyone’s cup of tea – or molasses.

1 Star: Not My Cup Of Tea

This book and I were not meant to be, and I wish I had put it down sooner. Or better yet, I wish I had never picked it up! It’s like going on a blind date and realizing you’re not a good match. A tough decision, but sometimes it’s best to say no.
