My Take: God Rest Ye, Royal Gentlemen is a wonderfully festive entry in Rhys Bowen’s Royal Spyness series, combining an English Christmas, royal intrigue, murder, and plenty of Georgie’s usual wit. I loved the Sandringham setting, the appearances by real members of the royal circle, and the way the mystery raises the stakes without losing the series’ lighthearted charm. I gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars, and longtime Lady Georgie readers should have great fun with this one.

Synopsis of God Rest Ye, Royal Gentlemen

This is the 15th book in the Royal Spyness series featuring Lady Georgianna Rannoch. Lady Georgie, as her friends call her, is 35th in line to the British throne and dead broke.

Lady Georgiana Rannoch is looking forward to her first Christmas as a newlywed at her own home – until plans change with a summons of sorts. Darcy’s Aunt Ermintrude, a former lady-in-waiting and confidante of the Queen, invites them to spend Christmas near Sandringham. The invitation isn’t simply about holiday hospitality – there are hints that Georgie’s presence is requested by the Queen herself.

Once there, Georgie is swept into the royal household’s tense atmosphere. Mrs. Simpson’s controversial presence looms large, and Georgie is asked to keep her eyes and ears open for the Queen. What begins as seasonal cheer quickly turns serious when accidents and deaths occur within the royal circle. As Georgie digs deeper, she realizes the intended target may be closer to the throne than anyone suspects. And when Darcy becomes entangled in the danger, Georgie must unravel the mystery before Christmas ends in tragedy.

What I Liked

The Setting

Sandringham at Christmas provides a delightful mix of grandeur and intimacy, with festive traditions layered over a tense atmosphere of suspicion. The historical royal backdrop adds extra sparkle to the story.

The Characters


Georgie shines as both sleuth and new wife, balancing humor with genuine determination. Darcy is a strong partner, and familiar favorites like Mummy, Grandad, and Fig add warmth and comic relief. The cameos from Mrs. Simpson and the Queen give the book extra historical flavor.

The Plot

The mystery builds steadily with clever twists, keeping the tension high while never losing the cozy, humorous tone that defines the series. The stakes feel higher here, with royal secrets on the line and Darcy himself at risk, which makes the resolution particularly satisfying.

What I Didn’t Like

Nothing!

There wasn’t anything that I didn’t like about this book. After 15 Lady Georgie books, I’m still completely in love with this lively, fun mystery series, and it was especially fun to have a new one published right before the holidays and actually set during a traditional English Christmas house party.
