While there are now many other “celebrity” book clubs in existence, most of them haven’t been around quite as long as Oprah’s which started in 1996. New titles by celebrated authors have been going on Oprah’s book list now for more than two decades.
The goal of Oprah’s Book Club has always been to connect book lovers with a community of other book lovers. To accomplish that, she chooses every book recommendation for Oprah’s Book List personally and chooses books that inspire thought and conversation. Some of the books chosen are written by new, emerging authors, while others are already celebrated authors. This gives us, the readers, a chance to find new authors that appeal to us and also to become reacquainted with some that are already well-known.

This list of Oprah’s book recommendations is updated monthly, or as often as Oprah actually recommends a new book for her book list, and is organized with the newest book first.

FAQs About Oprah’s Book List
Does Oprah’s Book Club Still Exist?
Oprah’s original book club was launched in 1996 and was announced on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah’s book list expanded over the next 15 years to include 70 books, became one of the most famous celebrity book clubs ever, and caused any book that had Oprah’s book list stamped on it to automatically be considered a distinguished piece of writing and well worth the read.
Then, Oprah’s book list had a gap of several years, relaunching in 2012 with what’s now called Oprah’s Book Club 2.0. The new version is in conjunction with Oprah’s media company and instead of choosing books every month, she picks them somewhat sporadically and only when they truly “speak” to her.
