New & Upcoming Nora Roberts Books
Nora Roberts shows no signs of slowing down. Her newest releases include romantic suspense, a brand-new magical trilogy, and another standalone novel already scheduled for 2027.
The Final Target – May 26, 2026
Nora Roberts’ newest standalone novel, The Final Target, is a romantic suspense thriller about debut author Arden Bowie, whose encounter with an obsessive fan turns increasingly dangerous. After a terrifying assault, Arden attempts to rebuild her life in a small Oregon town – but the man obsessed with her hasn’t forgotten her.
Birth of the Witch – November 17, 2026
Birth of the Witch launches the new Coven of Three Trilogy, Nora Roberts’ first series following the conclusion of the Lost Bride Trilogy. The story reaches from the witch persecutions of the 1690s to the present day, where thirteen-year-old Neve McShane discovers that the magical abilities in her family are very real – and that she has a role to play in an ancient battle between light and darkness.
The Missing – May 25, 2027
Nora Roberts’ next announced standalone novel is The Missing. The story centers on Rye Tremayne, who has had a talent for finding missing people and things since childhood and eventually turns that ability into a career. His work takes him across the country, but repeatedly draws him back to his small hometown in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula – where returning home may put everything he cares about at risk.
New to Nora Roberts? Start Here
With hundreds of books to choose from, deciding where to start with Nora Roberts can feel intimidating. I’ve been reading her books for years, though, and my advice is simple: start with the kind of Nora Roberts story that sounds most like you.
Whether you want classic Nora, pure romance, witches and magic, a sweeping fantasy world, or one of her newer romantic suspense novels, these are the books and series I’d recommend first.
For Classic Nora Roberts: Born in Fire
Start with Born in Fire, the first book in the Irish Born Trilogy (also known as the Concannon Sisters Trilogy).
This is one of the series that originally hooked me on Nora Roberts and, in particular, on those wonderful three-book series she does so well. Set in Ireland and centered around three sisters, it has romance, family relationships, and that almost indefinable bit of magic that Nora’s Irish-set books seem to have.
Another favorite in the same vein is the Gallaghers of Ardmore Trilogy, beginning with Jewels of the Sun. If you want to discover the Nora Roberts I originally fell in love with, either trilogy is a wonderful place to begin.
For Romance: The Next Always
If what you really want is romance, try The Next Always, the first book in the Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy.
The series combines three romances with family, friendship, and the restoration of a historic inn in Boonsboro, Maryland. One of my favorite things about it is that Boonsboro is a real town, and actual places associated with Nora Roberts inspired or appear in the books. There’s something especially fun about being able to step into part of the world you’ve been reading about.
The Bride Quartet, beginning with Vision in White, is another excellent choice if you’re looking for Nora at her most unabashedly romantic.
For Witches, Magic & Romance: Dance Upon the Air
I’ll admit it: I’m a sucker for Nora’s witchy books.
If you are too, start with Dance Upon the Air and the Three Sisters Island Trilogy. It has romance, friendship, magic, an island setting, and three women whose stories become increasingly intertwined.
Nora Roberts has returned to witches, legends, supernatural powers, and magic again and again throughout her career, but Three Sisters Island remains one of my favorite introductions to that side of her writing.
For Big Fantasy: The Awakening
If you’d rather jump straight into one of Nora Roberts’ larger fantasy worlds, start with The Awakening, book one of The Dragon Heart Legacy.
This is much more immersive fantasy than simply adding a touch of magic to a contemporary romance, and I thought the entire trilogy was simply amazing.
For an earlier example of Nora blending fantasy, romance, magic, and an epic battle between good and evil, try the Circle Trilogy, beginning with Morrigan’s Cross.
For Newer Nora Roberts: Inheritance
Want to start with something that feels like the Nora Roberts of today? Pick up Inheritance, the first book in The Lost Bride Trilogy.
This trilogy has so much of what I think of as classic Nora – romance, family and friendship, mystery, a wonderfully atmospheric setting, and the supernatural – but in one of her most recent series.
I loved the entire trilogy, and it’s an excellent choice if you’d rather begin with her newer work before exploring the decades of books that came before it.
Prefer a Standalone?
Try Nightwork.
If you’d rather try Nora Roberts without committing to an entire series, Nightwork is an excellent place to start. It’s a darker, suspenseful standalone that still delivers the strong character development and relationships that make her books unmistakably Nora.
And if you enjoy Nightwork, try Mind Games next. It’s another of Nora Roberts’ more recent standalones, with plenty of suspense and a darker edge – although if you’re anything like me, sticking to just one Nora Roberts book may not last long.
How Nora Roberts’ Books Have Changed Over Time
If you’ve only read Nora Roberts’ newer novels, some of her earliest books may come as a surprise. Roberts began her publishing career in the early 1980s writing category romances for Silhouette Books, and many of those early novels are considerably shorter and more focused on the central romance than the books she writes today.
Over the decades, her stories became longer and more complex, expanding beyond traditional contemporary romance to include romantic suspense, mysteries, paranormal elements, sweeping fantasy worlds, and stories built around families and communities.
As a longtime Nora Roberts reader, I think the difference is noticeable. Her early books can be fun glimpses of the writer she started as, but they don’t necessarily represent the Nora Roberts a new reader will encounter today. If you’re trying her for the first time, I’d start with one of the series or newer novels I’ve recommended above rather than simply beginning with her first published book and working forward.

- Born in Fire – 1994
- Born in Ice – 1995
- Born in Shame – 1996
Why I recommend the Born In series: This was one of the trilogies that originally hooked me on Nora Roberts. I love the combination of the three sisters, the Irish setting, and the strong sense of family running through all three books.
The MacKade Brothers

The Gallaghers of Ardmore
Set in the fictional Irish village of Ardmore, the Gallaghers of Ardmore Trilogy follows three siblings whose lives revolve around their family pub and the community surrounding it. Beginning with Jewels of the Sun, the trilogy blends romance, Irish folklore, family, and just enough magic to give the entire series a wonderfully enchanting feel.
- Jewels of the Sun – 1999
- Tears of the Moon – 2000
- Heart of the Sea – 2000
Why I love this series: The Gallaghers of Ardmore is one of the Nora Roberts trilogies that helped make me a longtime reader. Set in a small Irish village and centered around the Gallagher siblings, it has that wonderful combination of family, romance, community, and a touch of Irish magic that Nora does so well. If you want to experience classic Nora Roberts, this is one of my favorite places to start. And if the Irish setting is part of the appeal for you, you’ll find more recommendations in our guide to books set in Ireland.
Three Sisters Island Trilogy

- Dance Upon the Air – 2001
- Heaven and Earth – 2001
- Face the Fire – 2002
This is one of my favorite “witchy” trilogies: I’m a sucker for Nora Roberts when she adds a little witchiness to the romance, and Three Sisters Island is one of my favorites. The trilogy blends romance, friendship, magic, and a wonderfully atmospheric island setting, with each book building toward the larger story connecting the three women. If magical Nora sounds like your kind of Nora, don’t miss this one. And if you’re as much of a sucker for witchy stories as I am, you’ll find more in my list of witchy books.
The Key Trilogy

- Key of Valor – 2003

- Bed of Roses – 2009
- Savor the Moment – 2010
- Happy Ever After – 2010
Inn Boonsboro Trilogy
The Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy follows the Montgomery brothers as they restore a historic inn in the Maryland town of Boonsboro and, naturally, find romance along the way. - Island of Glass – 2016
The Chronicles of the One
The Chronicles of The One Trilogy takes Nora Roberts into post-apocalyptic fantasy as a deadly pandemic destroys much of the world’s population and supernatural powers begin emerging among the survivors. Darker and more epic than many of her romantic trilogies, the series follows the battle between good and evil as a radically changed world begins again.
- Year One – 2017
- Of Blood and Bone – 2018
- The Rise of Magicks – 2019
The Dragon Heart Legacy
The Dragon Heart Legacy begins in the modern world before opening the door to Talamh, a magical realm of faeries, dragons, mermaids, warriors, and ancient enemies. Beginning with The Awakening, the trilogy follows Breen Siobhan Kelly as she discovers the truth about her heritage, her powers, and the role she is destined to play in protecting both worlds.
- The Awakening – 2020
- The Becoming – 2021
- The Choice – 2022
This is one of my all-time favorites: The Dragon Heart Legacy shows just how far Nora Roberts can take you beyond traditional romance. This is full-scale fantasy – another world, magic, dragons, danger, and an adventure that unfolds across all three books – and I thought it was simply amazing. If you enjoy fantasy along with your romance, this trilogy is absolutely worth the commitment. You can read my full reviews of The Awakening, The Becoming, and The Choice.
The Lost Bride Trilogy
A haunted Victorian mansion, a centuries-old curse, seven murdered brides, and a very determined heroine are at the heart of The Lost Bride Trilogy. Beginning with Inheritance, the series follows Sonya MacTavish as she uncovers her connection to Poole Manor and attempts to break the curse that has haunted her newly discovered family for generations.
- Inheritance – 2023
- The Mirror – 2024
- The Seven Rings – 2025
Why I recommend it: The Lost Bride Trilogy felt like classic Nora Roberts to me, but with the darker, more suspenseful edge of her newer books. There’s romance, a haunted house, a centuries-old curse, ghosts, family, and a mystery that develops throughout the trilogy. I loved this series, and I’d especially recommend it if you want to see what newer Nora is like.
Coven of Three
The Coven of Three Trilogy is Nora Roberts’ newest magical series, beginning with Birth of the Witch. The story reaches back to the fear and persecution of the Salem era as Neve McShane discovers that her family’s unusual gifts connect her to a much older legacy – and a battle that is far from over.
- Birth of the Witch – November 17, 2026

Nora Roberts Writing as J.D. Robb
If you’ve come across books by J.D. Robb while searching for Nora Roberts, there’s a very good reason: J.D. Robb is Nora Roberts.
Roberts created the J.D. Robb pen name for her In Death series, which is quite different from the contemporary romances, family sagas, romantic suspense, and fantasy novels published under her own name.
Set in a near-future New York City, the In Death series centers on homicide detective Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke. Each book features a new crime or investigation, while Eve and Roarke’s relationship – along with a growing cast of friends, colleagues, and recurring characters – develops throughout the series.
Because those continuing relationships and character arcs are such an important part of the books, the In Death novels are best read in publication order, beginning with Naked in Death.
And there are a lot of them.
Rather than adding the entire In Death bibliography to this already very long Nora Roberts book list, we’re treating J.D. Robb as a separate series guide.
So, if you’re looking specifically for Eve Dallas and Roarke, you’ll want the J.D. Robb list. If you’re looking for Nora Roberts’ romances, trilogies, fantasy series, romantic suspense, and standalone novels, you’re exactly where you need to be.

With a bibliography this large, sometimes it’s easier to get away from the screen. I’ve created a printable Nora Roberts book list organized by series so you can check off what you’ve read, keep track of what’s next, or simply see her enormous catalog at a glance.

Whether you’re discovering her books for the first time or trying to figure out which titles you’re still missing, I hope this guide makes that enormous reading list a little easier to navigate.
And if you’re not quite sure where to begin, don’t let the size of the list intimidate you. Pick the series that sounds most like your kind of story, start with book one, and see where Nora takes you.
If you’re anything like me, one Nora Roberts trilogy has a funny way of turning into another.
