Rosemary Rogers is one of my all-time favorite trailblazers. Trailblazers of the romance novels genre, that is.

Yes, she’s definitely considered a trailblazer. Her first romance novel was published way back in 1974, and that book – Sweet Savage Love – was just the first of many.

Even though many of these books were written decades ago, I still love going back and rereading them.

There is just something about these trailblazer romance authors that you will forever love if you love the romance genre. But only if you’re a die-hard fan of the “bodice-ripper” type books that caused the romance genre to explode back in the 1970s and 80s.

Who Is Rosemary Rogers?

Rosemary Rogers was born Rosemary Jansz in 1932 in the British Colony of Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka). She was the eldest child of Dutch-Portuguese parents. Her father was a wealthy educator and Rosemary was raised with every possible luxury, including posh schools, servants, and visits to European spa resorts.

Rosemary was considered a “dreamy” child. I suppose that means she was always daydreaming!

I’m grateful for her daydreaming nature. Because those daydreams obviously turned into her fabulous romance novels. Supposedly Rosemary wrote her first book at age 8. Imagine that!

Well, despite the privileged lifestyle that Rosemary Rogers grew up with, her life wasn’t without problems. Eventually, several husbands and four children later, Rosemary was left on her own to support them all. She simply needed to find a source of income.

Luckily, she turned to her writing. Believe it or not, the manuscript that she wrote at age 8 eventually turned into her first book – Sweet Savage Love.
